How we approach the day, how we approach our work, and how we approach the complexities of leadership and changing systems is everything. It’s all about how we come to the table. And the energy we bring.
How we do one thing is how we do everything.
Recently, I’ve been experimenting with shifting from a “GOT to” attitude to “GET to” attitude. And it has been amazing.
I now recognize that for much of my life, I’ve pretty much operated within an “I’ve GOT TO” attitude. And I’m starting to recognize that “GOT TO” feels…heavy.
Drudgering.
Struggle.
Efforting.
Battling.
Draining.
“UGH! I’ve GOT TO!”
I can even feel my shoulders droop.
Yet, when I approach all that is before me with a “GET to” attitude, everything, everything, EVERYTHING turns into opportunity.
“I GET TO do this!”
Suddenly, what is in front of me and inside of me feels lighter.
Buoyant.
Opening.
Even challenges become invitations for growth.
“I GET TO figure out how to navigate this sticky situation!”
And sparkles of appreciation show up where there was once tinges of resentment.
“I GET TO steward this work forward!”
Beginning the day by asking, “What do I GET to do today” sets me up to bring my best self. Doing an end of the day review by asking “What did I GET TO do?” has been a complete reframe.
All is a gift.
As we work to change systems, a GET TO approach can help us as we navigate both the light and the dark places. The easy and the challenging. The joy and the suffering. The hope and the disappointment. Engaging and leading systems change invites us to be open to the possibilities and opportunities all around us.
What do you “GET to” do?
Wishing you moments of insight, clarity, and courage,
Matteah
