Reflections & Resonance

The Call of the Blue Jay

Lately I have been noticing Blue Jays wherever I go…
I mean, WHEREVER I go.

In my backyard.
Downtown.
Every time I get out of my car.
No matter where I am, Blue Jays seem to be everywhere.

I love it. It delights me.

Ted Andrews, in his book ‘Animal Speak: The Spiritual and Magical Powers of Creatures Great & Small’, says that according to the wisdom of many traditions, cultures and spiritual teachings, a key feature of the Blue Jay is communicating the Proper Use of Power.

Perhaps those Blue Jays are here reminding me, reminding all of us, that we all have great power…

…and therefore great responsibility.

Perhaps they are flying around the neighborhood shouting “USE YOUR POWER FOR GOOD!”

We all need to be reminded of our power.
The great power we possess in our bodies.
The great power we possess in our words.
The great power we possess in our actions.
The great power we possess in our minds and thoughts.

Perhaps the Blue Jay can simultaneously remind us to use our power for the good of the community and the care of the Earth.

It also delights me that Blue Jays are one of the amazing birds that don’t migrate. They stay here in Michigan all year round…just like us. They are here to bluntly remind us every day of our responsibility to one another and to the Earth. To recognize and use our power for protection and preservation.

I look forward to learning what the Blue Jay will teach me this winter; my ear is now tuned to their call so I know I will notice them differently. And hearing their call, I’ll remember to use my power for the highest good.

What gifts from the Earth have been coming into your view?

What might they be teaching you?
